Born in Paris in 1931, Chang Shana returned to China at the age of 3 with his father, the renowned artist Chang Shuhong (1904 – 1994). The family later settled down in Dunhuang where her father founded Dunhuang Art Institute dedicating to the research of Mogao grotto art. As an established art design educator and art designer, Chang Shana used to study under outstanding female architect and poet Lin Huiyin (1904 – 1955). Chang Shana was engaged in the architectural decoration of the façade and the architectural decoration pattern design of the banquet hall of the Great Hall of the People, as well as the architectural decoration design and mural creation of multiple national key architectural projects, such as the Cultural Palace of Nationalities, the Capital Theatre, and China World Hotel. In 1997, she was in charge of the design of the iconic "Forever Blooming Bauhinia" Sculpture (Golden Bauhinia) as a gift from the central government of China to Hong Kong SAR to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to the Motherland after more than 100 years of British colony. A former president of the former Central Academy of Arts & Design (now the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University) and the Honorary President of the Academy, she has devoted herself to the promotion of the Dunhuang art since her retirement.
