Zhang Hongguang
张宏光

Zhang Hongguang is a famous composer and music educator in contemporary China, professor and master’s supervisor at the Beijing Film Academy, and Head of China Film Music Institute. He is one of the Four Batches of Talents recognized by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, an artist excellent in performing skills and moral integrity recognized by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and a leading talent of the third National Ten Thousand Talents Program. He is entitled to the Special Allowance of the State Council. Born in a musical family of the Korean ethnic group in Shenyang, Zhang got started with music in his childhood under the guidance of his father. In 1977, he joined the army and became an instrumental player in a publicity team. Next year, he was transferred to the acrobatic troupe of the Shenyang Military Army Command. In 1981, he was admitted to the attached middle school of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music and began to show his talent in composition. Some of his works evoked response in the music community. In 1984, he was enrolled at the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. Zhang has created a great variety of works, including symphony, opera, dance drama, and music for film and TV play, which are all popular among the audience and have won multiple state-level awards. He has composed over 500 songs and arranged over 5,000 songs. His representative works include opera Swan, song and dance drama Somewhere Faraway, dance drama Dream in Dunhuang and The Goddess of River Luo (co-created), 3D stage play White-Haired Girl, symphonic suite Ode to Hakka Women, piano concerto Tomorrow, a fantasy trilogy performed by erhu and orchestra, three simple folk orchestra works, Anti-Pandemic Song Cycles: Silent Love, and music for TV plays The Great Hanwu Emperor, The Kangxi Era, Secret History of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, National Children, Huafan Yemao, and A New Story of Liuchi Alley, and for the film A Train of Hostage. Major songs composed by Zhang are Borrow Another 500 Years from the Heaven, Await, Loyalty, The Chant of Beauty, Sunshine Road, You, and so on. Major songs arranged by him are Spring Story, Mother, Father, Visit Home Often, Children Travelling Thousands of Miles, A Couple of Butterflies, A Wolf Falls in Love with a Sheep, Outside the Window, Swan Geese, and so forth.
